Dear Valerio,
In our organisation (CSIC), the *critical technology* we believe should
be prioritized from 2029 onward is the *expansion of photonic integrated
circuits (PICs) into the visible spectrum*, *building on the
developments achieved within PIXEurope as it was one of the priorities
(expanding the wavelength of the PICs).*
A substantial set of applications require *extensive and versatile
prototyping and fabrication capabilities for integrated photonic devices
in the visible range*. For this reason, we consider *visible‑wavelength
PICs* our primary strategic direction for the coming years.
Additionally, it is worth paying attention to hybrid integration
strategies and photonic systems packaging as a second, supporting
strategic priority.
Key future application areas include:
* *Energy‑efficient HMI systems*, including displays for *augmented
reality (AR)* and *virtual reality (VR)*
* *Smart sensing* using visible‑range PICs
* *Cybersecurity* solutions leveraging wavelength‑specific optical
functions
* *New computing paradigms*, such as quantum information processing
and neuromorphic**computing
* *3D Heterogeneous integration (photonics and electronics) *in the
visible range.
These areas represent high‑impact domains where European capabilities
can be significantly strengthened through a dedicated effort on
*visible‑spectrum PIC technologies*, ensuring competitiveness,
innovation capacity, and technological sovereignty.
Thanks,
Joaquín
